What is Windsurfing?
Windsurfing is a combination of sailing and surfing. The rider stands on a board using a sail to catch the wind for propulsion. Windsurfing is a recreational water sport and emerged in the late 1960s from the surf culture of California. Its major disciplines include wave, freestyle and slalom. Other names are "boardsailing" and "sailboarding". IQfoil is the relatively new windsurfing racing class. Windfoiling is a type of windsurfing, where the board is lifted off the water using a hydrofoil. In wingfoiling you use a board with a foil and in addition a wing, which you hold freely in your hands to use the wind.

Wind speed and wind direction are most important in windsurfing. Depending on the waters you are windsurfing, the wave heights and tides play an important role as well. With regard to the wind speed and possible gusts, the rider chooses a different sail size. The shape of the sail defines the propulsion, the maneuverability and the difficulty of the windsurf equipment. For more information about wind forces see this wind speed table.
